Grand Canyon — Day One
The first look across the canyon, and an evening that changed the scale of the journey.
The road had been leading west for days. Then, almost without warning, it reached the edge.
I left Flagstaff in the afternoon and watched the high country open into long, straight road. The sky was enormous, the horizon clear, and the drive carried the feeling of an ending I had been approaching without quite being able to picture it.

Near the park, elk moved through the grass beside the road. It was a quiet reminder that this was not simply a viewpoint at the end of a highway, but a living landscape continuing far beyond anything I could see.
Nothing quite prepared me for the first look over the rim. The ground simply fell away. Cliffs, buttes, and shadowed distances repeated toward the horizon at a scale that made every photograph I had seen feel inadequate.

I arrived with enough time to watch the late light move through the canyon. Rock that had first looked muted began to catch orange and red. Clouds drifted above it, throwing new shadows across formations already layered with their own.
I found a place near the rim and stayed there. After days of driving, walking, meeting people, and watching the landscape change, sitting still felt like the right way to arrive.

The sun touched the far horizon and disappeared. For a few minutes, the canyon held the last light while the sky moved from gold to orange and then to a thin, luminous blue.
I remained after sunset. Darkness gathered first in the depths and then across the rim. When the stars appeared, the journey seemed to widen once more—this time upward.

The trail below the rim could wait until morning. This first day was about reaching the edge, watching the light leave it, and understanding that the road had brought me somewhere genuinely different.
